Why do my teeth hurt? Experiencing teeth aches when you wake up, many reasons can give you the teeth ache your overall health-related issues or dental problems.

Some people experience tooth pain in the morning due to clenching their jaw or grinding their teeth at night. Grinding habits can cause your teeth to ache and is most common in adults. In most cases, this is a result of chronic stress.  

Why do my teeth hurt?

Several conditions can cause tooth pain, and some causes can be changed by changing your habits, and some can be severe problems that can send you to visit a dentist soon.

Here are the most common possible causes of tooth hurt.

There are a few reasons that can cause teeth to hurt. Some people clench and grind their teeth at night, and sometimes lying down can increase the blood flow to the head and gives a sudden ache in the teeth.

  1. Sleep bruxism 

Sleep Bruxism is also known as teeth-grinding, which some people do at night while sleeping. People, while sleeping, unconsciously clench their jaws and gnash or grind their teeth. 

  1. Sinusitis

If you are undergoing pain in your upper back teeth, then it can be a sinus infection. If you have a sinus infection, the liquid collects while lying down and during sleep. 

This causes pressure and pain, especially in upper or premolar teeth.

  1. Cavities or tooth decay

Cavities are the most familiar cause of toothache. When cavities are left untreated, they cause intense pain. Cavities can expand into the tooth’s inner player called the pulp, where the tooth nerve and blood vessels are situated, so treating them is necessary.

  1. Gum disease

Gum disease at an early stage is called gingivitis which causes red, swollen gums that can bleed while you brush your teeth. The buildup of plaque within the gumline causes toothache. 

When gingivitis becomes more severe, it becomes periodontitis, a serious gum disease. Gum infection affects the gum line, teeth, tissues, and jawbone. It is a long-term disease that causes intense pain in the teeth and jaw and sometimes leads to tooth loss.

  1. Sleep Position

Eight hours of sleep is essential for every human being. Quality sleep can help make you feel better, making you feel active the whole day and improving your mood. Getting a good night’s rest helps stimulate your immune system. Use the below tips to sleep peacefully until your dental appointment: 

Avoid eating certain foods like acidic, sugary, and cold foods that can intensify your toothache while sleeping.

Dont forget to conclude your oral hygiene routine before bed; brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash removes debris that can cause discomfort while controlling further decay or damage.

Rinse your mouth with a mixture of salt and water. Warm water with salt kills harmful bacteria and reduces the risk of infection.

  1. Overuse of mouthwash

Mouthwash is suitable for your mouth, but excess use of mouthwash can harm your mouth. Remember that mouthwash should be used a maximum of twice daily, not more than twice. 

Nowadays, it has become a daily oral care routine with brushing and flossing for many people. But from dentists’ point of view, it should not be used more than twice. Overusing mouthwash can cause dry mouth, inflamed gums, and mouth sores. 

Regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist can maintain your oral health.

  1. Acidic Foods

Foods and beverages that are acidic in nature can contribute to tooth sensitivity. Foods with acid content can cause harm to your teeth’s enamel. 

Consumption of acidic food slowly can remove teeth enamel over time and expose the nerve, the inner layer of your teeth.

If you feel your tooth hurt, it could be because of highly acidic food that can make your teeth sensitive and break simultaneously. 

To avoid sensitivity and discomfort, cut back on acidic food. Try eating a more balanced diet to preserve yourself from unnecessary tooth pain.


As you can see, not maintaining a balanced diet and not visiting your dentist for regular oral checkups can cause many dental issues. These symptoms, including toothaches, mandate an emergency visit to your dentist and conduct a custom treatment plan.
